Program overview

At Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club, we truly enjoy watching young sailors improve their skills and enjoying being out on the water.

For children who have completed NLSC’s LTS 1 program, or who have some sailing experience and who have access to their own boats, we offer a Development Squad program.

Most of our sailors work towards gaining skills to compete in our club races and at external class events, but we know that some children just want to improve their skills so they can sail competently around the lake. Talk to us about your child’s sailing aims and we’ll help them achieve those aims.

Development Squad sessions are listed on the Sailing Calendar. On Squad Choice days, there is no formal coaching. Instead, competent sailors are encouraged to get out on the water to practice what they have learnt. On these days, ALL sailors must be supervised by their parents and still attend the 9.45am briefing before going on the water.

What happens at Development Squad?

Development Squad sessions are held irrespective of the weather. On days when the weather is not appropriate to sail, theory lessons are held in the clubhouse.

Development Squad sessions are designed for intermediate juniors who are confident being on the water and who are able to tack and gybe.

Our coaches help Development Squad sailors fine-tune these boat handling skills and start to introduce boating rules and racing concepts, such as start line procedures and navigating around a specific course.

Our more experienced juniors are encouraged to participate in these Development Squad sessions to gain extra training tips and to then join in our junior races held at the conclusion of each Development Squad session.

Program timetable:

9.15am – on the beach, rigging boats

9.45am – briefing by coaches

10.00am – on the water for LTS 2 sessions

11.15am – junior championship and point score racing for experienced sailors, and competent LTS 2 sailors. For those LTS 2 sailors not competing in the morning races, they can return to shore to un-rig their boats and join the LTS 1 sailors for lunch.
